As I suspected, behind its blank white screen, my phone was still very much alive, its data completely intact, albeit trapped, without any user interface with which to interact with the outside world. Kind of like the guy in that video for the Metalica song "One" (which our student teacher actually had everyone watch as part of a lesson in my 8th grade English class, perhaps because she wanted us all to know that she was cool and she "got it").

Anyway, unlike the guy in the Metalica video, my phone has Bluetooth, and by blindly pressing the right sequence of buttons, I was able to coax it into uploading all of its photos to my computer. Then I transfered the SIM card to a replacement that T-mobile sent me, and everything was as good as new. (Things didn't work out nearly as well for the guy in the Metalica video, who ultimately used Morse code to beg for death and ended up getting his feeding tube pulled.)

So for all of you out there who love justice, I have good news. The photo of our culprit's plates was salvaged, and hopefully it will provide the police with the information they need to get this rogue driver off the streets. (To celebrate my triumph, I have posted the photo. However, to protect the accused's privacy, I have obscurred the numbers. Yes, I realize that this makes the picture kind of pointless.)

Doesn't the phone save the pictures on the SIM card or an included SD card? Couldn't you have just transferred the card to someone else's phone (or the new one you got) to get them off?

I'm a big fan of good stories, though, and your way was much better.

I wish it could have been that simple. My phone saves all its data to a built-in memory card that cannot be swapped or upgraded. I actually remember reading about that in user reviews before I picked my phone, but I didn't really care about that at the time.
